The Bailout Fails… what now?

Dowplunges
Umm… so how about those scary markets?  5 years ago I don’t think any of us would have saw all of the things that are happening with the market going this far.  In high school U.S. History and college Finance 101 I’m pretty sure that we learned that the market would always correct itself, especially after the U.S. learned its lessons after the Great Depression, but today as we watched the markets fall more than they’ve ever fallen in one day that idea sounded really distant and like we’ve all been psyched out.  What happens when markets aren’t really working?  We have politicians arguing over too much regulation and people losing their houses and abandoning mortgages.  We’ve got Palin and McCain taking credit for making bailouts that never materialize and Obama and House Democrats promising that it will all be okay.  Will it?  We’ll see, but Wall Street doesn’t really seem to think they’ll to good of a job on their own.  Can we get Bloomberg, Oprah, and Warren Buffet to come in and help out here.  I don’t think we’re dealing with the sharpest business and financial minds here.

At least Europe wants to save THEIR economy

Six European countries announced that after weekend discussions they WOULD be offering a bailout solution totaling about $150 billion.  Their bailouts are for large financial and mortgage institutions that the countries have deemed necessary to the ongoing health of their economies… much like ours.  Most of their bailout plans are like ours except for the fact that theirs were decisive, immediate, started before banks started crashing left and right, and passed.  We all understand why a bailout is potentially a bad idea for our government’s finances and we understand why such a large bailout goes against the U.S. free-market ideas.  However, the government has really let markets run as free as Shaq going commando over here.  The markets have tested their freedom and have seen the limit.  Now something has to be done, even if it something just to make people feel better about things for awhile.  Most people already feel like, "damn, the government isn’t really doing anything."  Now people are having their fears confirmed that not only in our economy broken and broke, but that our government does absolutely nothing for hours and months down there in Washington.  I mean tons of them worked all weekend to put a bipartisan bailout plan on paper just to not even pass it.  European countries talk quietly for a weekend and have made a decision.  Come on now.

What happens when you don’t pick your own VP

With the Biden Palin debate happening this week people are starting to turn their attention to the VPs more than ever.  Some Palin fans are saying that McCain’s camp, which has a bunch of Bush advisers in it and we know where that will get you, is controlling Palin too much.  They are intensely cramming with Palin so that she learns about issues she never had to deal with before.  Critics say that what the campaign is really doing is subduing Palin’s personality and putting her under strict control so that she is unable to express her true opinions.  Have they seen Palin?  If what’s been going on is under control what does out of control look like?  The campaign says that the cramming has really ramped up since Palin’s interview with Katie Couric and I really have to say they should’ve been cramming with her before that interview because it just looked bad.  The critics of the way that Palin is being prepped should get over it and hope that they are able to get her on track with all the issues real fast because if they like her just for her "personality" and vote for McCain and Palin just for that reason the rest of us (and the critics) are going to be looking real sad when she goes off on another Bush-esque rant about job creation or foreign policy.  I bet McCain is shaking his head like, "this sucks… she doesn’t know what the hell we’re talking about.  Wish I had picked somebody I knew."

The CW’s Stylista Contestants are Revealed…

Elle editor Anne Slowey and her slaves contestants.

Uh… I was almost on that show… O well. Anyways, the contestants were revealed in a recent press release from the CW. Check them out here- The last "Stylista" remaining will win a paid editorial position at Elle magazine as Junior Editor, a paid lease on a great apartment in Manhattan, and a clothing allowance at H&M, all for one year, valued at $100,000.

PS- They couldn’t get them a better clothing allowance? I mean lets break this down: Junior Editor at Elle= $55,000 , Apartment in NYC= $36,000 , leaving $9,000 in clothes per year, thats $750 a month, which is enough for 21 dresses at 34.50 each!! Couldn’t they do Banana Republic? Or Bloomingdales, or BlueFly.com? I’m just sayin’…

Wtf? Both candidates are claiming victory

Last night, everyone’s eyes were on the debate. Literally one minute after it ended, the McCain camp issued a statement:

"There was one man who was presidential tonight, that man
was John McCain. There was another who was political, that was Barack
Obama. John McCain won this debate and controlled the dialogue
throughout, whether it was the economy, taxes, spending, Iraq or Iran.
There was a leadership gap, a judgment gap, and a boldness gap on
display tonight, a fact Barack Obama acknowledged when he said John
McCain was right at least five times. Tonight’s debate showed John
McCain in command of the issues and presenting a clear agenda for
America’s future." –Jill Hazelbaker, McCain-Palin 2008 Communications
Director

The Obama campaign response:

"This was a clear victory for Barack Obama on John McCain’s
home turf. Senator McCain offered nothing but more of the same failed
Bush policies, and Barack Obama made a forceful case for change in our
economy and our foreign policy. While Senator McCain wants to keep
giving huge tax cuts to corporations and said nothing about the
challenges Americans are facing in their daily lives, Barack Obama will
be a fierce advocate for tax cuts for the middle class, affordable
health care, and a new energy economy that creates millions of jobs.
While foreign policy was supposed to be John McCain’s top issue, Barack
Obama commanded that part of the debate with a clear call to
responsibly end a misguided war in Iraq so that we can finish the fight
against al Qaeda in Afghanistan. John McCain needed a game-changer
tonight, and by any measure he didn’t get it," said Obama-Biden
campaign manager David Plouffe.

I think it really comes down to what your values are, and Obama pointed out that as President, thats priority number one. McCain stuck to his "I came over on the Mayflower, I was there when they signed the Constitution, Reagan was my homeboy" approach. What’s frustrating is no one really knows whats really happening in politics anyway. I mean just because you watch CNN and read the paper doesn’t mean you know wtf the gov’t knows. That’s why Obama hits home for a lot of people because he steps in to the realm of "Hello. I live in this country too and I know what you’re going through. Here are 324 specific things I’d like to change."

On the other hand, Republicans seem to always argue from a position of "Silly opponent, I clearly know what I’m doing, I only speak slowly in 10 word sentences, your policies are wrong and will hurt my dear simple America. Guffaw Guffaw. " McCain numerous times based his arguments on false representations of Obama’s stance on an issue saying things like, "I believe blah blah, as opposed to Mr. Obama’s campaign" or "We should do blah blah, as opposed to what Mr.Obama is proposing" while Obama is yelling from the sideline like, "Hello, I never said that…. That’’s not true… Really John?" and further, McCain refused to look at Obama, never called him Barack, and even seemed really upset by his presence, mad rude.

A Weekend of Art Down in Brooklyn

Dumbo_art_fest_2

For 12 years downtown Brooklyn has been the scene of an amazing art festival, the DUMBO Art Under the Bridge Festival.  The thing about this art festival is that it includes ALL kinds of art and not just art that you can look at, but art that you can really get into.  The festival organizers are anticipating that there will be 150,00 in attendance over these next 3 days, which makes sense because its free.  All of the area studios are promising to open their doors and show their exhibits for free, there is going to be a dance party at Fulton Ferry State Park on Saturday Afternoon, and there is tons of public art to check out.

The New York Film Festival

Picture_1

I know, I know… another film festival, but film festivals are waaay better than regular movies because there is tons of extra stuff that make the movies more than just a movie, but also an experience.  For example, The New York Film Festival has HBO Film Dialogues where the audience can sit in on discussions with these great directors and hear their thoughts on the movies they made.  A couple of the movies that will be shown at the NY Film Festival include Che with Benecio Del Toro and Changeling with Angelina Jolie.  New York Film Festival starts today and goes on until October 12th.  Visit the New York Film Festival website for more information.
